Group 800 (Molecular Modeling Class) Accounts

This page contains important information for holders of Group 800 accounts. The links on the left of the table will open in a separate browser window. The links at the bottom of the page will open in the current browser.

Claim your account!

There are a couple of things you have to do to claim your account. Otherwise, you will be locked out within two weeks of the distribution of these accounts.

Download Account Guide

This tells you how to set up your account: change the password, the user name on your account and much more.

Change User Name

You must change the user name for your account. Currently, it is something like "Unassigned ...". If you do not change the name, it is assumed that the account is unclaimed. The process is explained in the Account Guide.

If you don't want to read the guide and you know IRIX, type the following in a terminal window:

ypchpass -f "Your Full Name"

where you would put your actual name between the quotes.

Rules

Please note the newly instituted rule on screen locks: they have been disabled and you are not allowed to install and use your own screen locks.

Important Dates

Monday, January 10, 2005: Accounts can be used
Saturday, January 22, 2005: Accounts must be registered on the web by midnight
Monday, January 24, 2005: Unregistered accounts will be disabled.
Saturday, May 14, 2005: All accounts disabled

Register Your Account

You must register your account by midnight of the second Saturday after the week in which the accounts were distributed. In other words, you have at least one week but no more than two weeks to register your account. Unregistered accounts will be disabled.

A few words about printing.

MacOS X Computers

Your Group 800 account is valid on public MacOS X computers. There is one each in CE312 (Bottom) and CE314 (Bushy).

The iMac in CE314 has an open account for public use. The Mac application for file transfer is Fugu.

You must set up your account for MacOS X. On either Bottom or Bushy, log in and open a terminal. You can use the terminal supplied by the X11 server (in the Utilities folder). Type the following command:

cp ~owner/.cshrc ~/

This command copies the hidden file named ".cshrc" in the home directory of the user named "owner" into your home directory. This will take effect at the next login.

Remote Access

The Firewall (which is managed by the Institute and is outside our control) restricts access to our computers from outside the Cherry Emerson building.

Termination

Soon after the end of the of modeling class, your files will disappear and your account will be deleted. This is the only warning you will get. You must get a Group 900 account and transfer your files to this account before the extermination of Group 800 accounts. No extension of a Group 800 account will be granted.
