The reorganization of the file systems, how that affects you and what you have to do to adapt. |

The file system reorganization is not complete. The file system in the Fulton domain has been reorganized. All user directories are now placed in the /SGI file system and home directories are placed underneath in group folders named after the group number. Thus, /SGI/600/ to /SGI/900/. Shared programs remain in the /gt file system. You are not affected by this unless you had used absolute file paths in your resource and job scripts. If you have to use an absolute path, try using the symbol "~" (a single tilde) to refer to your home directory and "~another" to refer to another's home directory. If you had used absolute paths, here is a table to help you correct your scripts:
If you use symbolic paths, instead of the new absolute paths in the above table, you will not have to revise for the next reorganization of the file systems. The SGI desktop environment may be slightly altered but you can work around the imperfections. More on this later. In MacOS X, you will have to reconstruct aliases to your home directory on the SGI. Do not open the old references or you will mess up your login. Remove all the old references. For example, drag them off the Finder sidebar or Dock. Login to Quince. Before you press the Connect button, click on the Options button. Elect to save your password to the Keychain. Then, select the SGI volume. In that volume, open your group folder and look for your home folder. Drag it to the sidebar or to your Dock. |
