Printing from SGI workstations

The SGI workstations and the server (Wart) are connected to one black-and-white laser printer. This is the HP LaserJet 2200 in CE 314 that is nicknamed Hillary.

To print, just select the Print item from the File menu of your application. From the command line, you can print a text document "a.txt" with the command "lp a.txt".

There are some limitations with printing from a SGI. You will print at 600 dpi on a printer that is capable of 1200 dpi (but the difference should not be significant). You cannot make use of the duplexing capability of the printer. Nor can you specify a media source (which tray to use). If you need more control for your printing or if you need color prints, you must transfer your document to a personal computer that has better access to these printers.

The links between the SGI workstations and the printer are very fragile. If one is broken (e.g. the printer is switched off when someone on a workstation is trying to print) the workstation will not be able to print again until the printing system on the affected workstation is restarted. Print jobs will accumulate silently and on restart the jobs will be sent to the printer and by then the output is often unwanted.
