Computer Resources in the Harvey Laboratory

The computers in the Harvey laboratory are grouped into domains. Users are assigned to one or more groups. Group membership determines the type and amount of resources available. An account is valid in at least one domain but a user may be granted access to other domains. Each domain provides unique services but many applications are available in multiple domains. Although the domains are mostly independent of one another, home directories are cross-mounted in most domains. This allows users to use the best workstation or application to work on their data, regardless of their origin. This is done transparently, without file transfers.

Domains

All the machines in a domain run the same operating system; for the Fulton domain it is IRIX, for the DeKalb domain, MacOS X and for the Cobb domain it is LINUX.
